My Story: I am a rising senior at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology at Alexandria, VA. Music has been an important part of my life since my early childhood. I have been learning classical and contemporary music with various teachers for the last several years. I wanted to share my love of music with the community, so in the summer of 2021, I planned and conducted an experimental free 8 week piano session plan for kids and adults in the community and received a very encouraging response. My objective was to get students started so they could experience and explore music through piano lessons and decide if they want to pursue it further. I absolutely enjoyed the sessions and so did the kids. My love for music and my interest in teaching have helped me grow as a musician and also as a mentor for young kids. During the summers of 2022 and 2023, I successfully held another set of 8 sessions. My biggest achievement through these sessions was being able to work with students with special needs and keep them interested in music.
I also play the bassoon, a large woodwind instrument, in my high school band and have also played in middle school and high school district band. Through a basic music education in piano, it has been relatively easily for me to pick up other instruments- I hope to provide such a foundation for younger students who aspire to be musicians specializing in multiple instruments.
